Learning objectives

At the end of the course, students will have acquired the tools to be able to reflect critically on Portuguese, on its historical evolution and on its
polycentric specificity. Furthermore, they will have developed basic receptive skills in the two varieties (PE and PB) and will have chosen the variety in
to develop a productive competence, being, therefore, able to understand, produce and translate written and oral texts of
elementary difficulty. Such knowledge and skills will be acquired through regular participation in lessons and other activities
supplementary didactics.

Course unit content

Introduction to the study of the Portuguese language (European Portuguese PE and notions of Brazilian Portuguese PB). The course intends to deal with the historical and socio-political evolution of Portuguese in the European and non-European context. The purpose of the course is to introduce the beginner student into the linguistic space of Portuguese expression, providing him with the essential historical-cultural and linguistic-grammatical tools necessary to start undertaking a complete and satisfactory educational path.

Full programme

1. In the mod. A will be made an introduction to the history of Portugal and the Portuguese language, following the diachronic path of the fundamental phases of their formation in the light of their geographical and cultural space.
2. In the mod. B will address concepts of linguistic variation, norm and linguistic preconception, observing them in their theoretical and practical dimension, with particular attention to the complex and stratified Brazilian sociolinguistic reality.
The exercises carried out by specialized mother-tongue personnel will propose the study of the basic grammatical structures of the contemporary Portuguese language, both from a descriptive-normative point of view and from an Italian-Portuguese contrastive perspective, in which elements of phonetics, essential vocabulary , morphology, verbal system, elementary and paratactic syntactic structures.

Teaching methods

- Seminar activity (text analysis)

The course will have a frontal character, being dedicated to the presentation of a historical-linguistic reality and the exposition of the main characteristics of "lusophony", and a collaborative one, through the analysis of texts and problems in seminar form.
The lessons will be supported by audiovisual material: images relating to the authors, texts, events and places covered.

All the material will be uploaded on the Elly page of the course.
The course will be accompanied by language exercises held by collaborators and linguistic experts during both semesters.

Assessment methods and criteria

The verification of linguistic knowledge and skills takes place through a written and an oral test.

WRITTEN TEST
- Sections 1-4 (Lecture): Verification of knowledge relating to the competence of the Portuguese language corresponding to the A2 (6 CFU) or B1 (12 CFU) level of the Common European Framework of Reference.
Up to three points may be added to the score obtained in this part (only after passing the written test), distributed as follows: 1) Participation in lessons and completion of homework carried out during the year; 2) Participation in the language exchange project; 3) Positive outcome in the reader's oral interview.
- Section 5 (Portuguese linguistics): Two questions relating to some linguistic aspects addressed in the Language and Translation course (max: 2 points on the total mark of the written test).

ORAL EXAM
Access to the oral test is subject to passing the written test. Please also remember that it will not be possible to take the exam without having registered for the oral test on Esse3.

The Language and Translation course will take place in the second semester 2023/24 (Period A+B)
