Learning objectives

The aim of the course is the acquisition of spoken and written Chinese language skills at level A2.
At the end of the course, students are expected to:
- possess a good knowledge of sentence structure;
- be able to recognize and write the characters learned during the lessons;
- sustain a conversation in simple communication contexts;
- be able to translate simple texts from Italian to Chinese and from Chinese to Italian;
- have a basic knowledge of Chinese literature

Prerequisites

Students must have attended the Chinese and South East Asian Languages and Literatures course I (mod. A and mod. B).
Before the start of the course, an Introduction test to evaluate the knowledge level will be available to the students on the Elly platform.

Course unit content

- consolidation of the sentence structure knowledge
- nominal determination
- verbal determination;
- aspectual particles and some verbal complements;
-short conversations in simple communication contexts;
- translation from Chinese to Italian and from Italian to Chinese
- basic knowledge of Chinese poetry, historiography, theater and fiction.

Teaching methods

The course will take place through lectures and exercises, individual and group, aimed at consolidating grammar rules, spoken , written and translation skills.
Classes will take place in telepresence through the use of Teams and Elly platforms.
Lessons will be held in synchronous mode (Teams); to encourage the active participation of students, weekly activities will be proposed through the use of the resources available in Elly (discussion forum and quiz).
Slides and all the material provided by the teacher will be uploaded to Elly at the end of each lesson and will be an integral part of the course material.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final exam will consist of written and spoken examination. Only students that have already sustained and passed the written test will be able to proceed with the oral exam.
The written test will last a maximum of two hours, during which linguistic knowledge (grammar, knowledge of characters, syntax and translation) will be evaluated. The test will be composed of different kind of exercises: reordering of characters to form sentences (5 pt), insertion (7 pt), correction of errors (8 pt) and translations (10 pt). The test will be evaluated on a 0-30 scale and the results will be published on the Elly platform.
The spoken test will be focused on linguistic knowledge (reading, translation from Chinese into Italian and vice versa and knowledge of characters) and contents of literature and culture.
The final grade will be the average between the two tests result.
The use of dictionaries is not allowed during the tests.
In case of online final examination, the written test will be carried out on the Elly / Respondus platforms, while the spoken test on Teams.
