Learning objectives
The course aims to allow the student to know and understand the essential elements of avian production; The aetiological, clinical, epidemiological, diagnostic and prophylactic aspects of avian diseases.
D1 - Knowledge and understanding
The student will have to demonstrate to know the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and prophylaxis of infectious, parasitic and mycotic diseases of poultry and avian species; must be able to prepare and apply a vaccination protocol; should recall the main Veterinary Police measures concerning the infectious diseases of avian species.
D2 - Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the training activity, the student will have to demonstrate to be able to apply differential diagnosis protocols to infectious, parasitic and poultry diseases and to be able to discuss the management of outbreaks of infectious disease.
D3 - Making judgements
The student should be able to interpret clinical signs and gross lesions of avian diseases, by framing them in the normative environment where provided. The student should also be able to assess the appropriate biosecurity and prophylactic measures.
D4 - Communication
At the end of the training activity, the student must demonstrate that he / she can express himself / herself with lexicon properties in the field of avian pathologies concepts, including regulatory aspects.
D5 - Lifelong learning skills
The student should be able to update himself/herself and apply these knowledge in the field of etiological, epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic aspects of avian pathologies and the relevant Italian and EU Community legislation.
Prerequisites
Microbiologia ed Epidemiologia; Malattie Infettive I
Course unit content
The course is aimed at teaching knowledge and understanding of the basics of aetiology, epidemiology, clinical signs in bacterial, viral, parasitic and mycotic diseases of poultry; related diagnostic methods; prophylaxis; vaccine typology and use of vaccination in control programs.
In particular, the following diseases will be treated:
Colibacillosis, Staphylococcosis, Fowl Cholera and other avian pasteurellosis, Avian Salmonellosis, Avian Clostridiosis, Campylobacteriosis, Tuberculosis, Mycoplasmosis, Chlamydiosis.
Newcastle Diseases, Avian metapneumovirus, Avian Influenza, Infectious Bronchitis, Marek’s Disease, Infectious Laryngotracheitis, Infectious Bursal Disease, Avian Encephalomyelitis, Avian Pox, Avian retroviral infections, Avian adenoviral infections.
Coccidiosis, Histomoniasis, endo- and ectoparasite diseases.
Aspergillosis, Candidiasis, Mycotoxicosis.
The national and Community regulatory aspects related to avian diseases will be considered, both as surveillance plans and as management of outbreaks of infectious disease

Teaching methods
Oral lessons, seminars and practice, in presence, telepresence via Teams o blended modality.
Assessment methods and criteria
Examination of the expected learning outcomes will be carried out finally in a single examination together with the module of Infectious Diseases II. The exam will be carried out by oral examination, in telepresence via Teams o blendedd modality. The student must answer 3 questions, addressing the aspects:
1 question related to: identification of organs and lesions of avian species by photographic images
1 question related to: infectious diseases (bacterial, viral or parasitic) of avian species
1 question related to: breeding, biosafety, management of vaccine protocols, regulatory aspects in the management of infectious diseases of avian species
The aim is to ascertain if the student has a good knowledge of the topics of the course, has good communication skills and is able to use it autonomously.
The result is assigned to the overall assessment of the answers from the student. The final mark is expressed in thirtieths.
Students with specific learning disability, certified according to the law n. 170/2010 will be granted the benefits provided by law.
