Learning objectives
The teaching of Italian literature and European culture (6 credits) has the following objectives:
- consolidate knowledge of the authors and main works, genres and stylistic-formal phenomena, themes and ideological contents that characterize the history of Italian literature;
- provide the essential tools for the critical reading of literary texts in Italian;
- frame works and authors of the Italian tradition in the broader context of mutual influences with respect to European literature and culture.
In particular, through participation in lessons and the study of teaching materials, students will be able to:
- acquire knowledge relating to authors, works, literary genres and main movements of specific historical-literary periods;
- learn methodologies for the analysis of the rhetorical-formal, thematic and historical-cultural aspects of complex texts;
- learn to comment in a timely, informed and reasoned manner on the works presented in class, to establish motivated thematic, formal and cultural correlations between different works, to contextualise individual works and authors within a historical period;
- learn to discuss in an adequate manner, with effectiveness and linguistic propriety, with attention to the technical vocabulary and with independent judgement, the specific contents of the teaching and the works considered in class.
Prerequisites
The prerequisites required for understanding the lessons are:
1) good knowledge of the Italian language;
2) scholastic knowledge of Italian literature.
Course unit content
The lessons will be dedicated to the in-depth study of some Italian classics, mainly of a modern context, considered in relation to authors, works, forms and themes of European literature and culture.
Students will also have to acquire, consolidate and deepen, on the one hand, knowledge relating to certain historical-literary periods through the study of a history of literature manual accompanied by an anthological selection of exemplary texts; on the other hand, knowledge relating to the essential tools for analyzing texts in poetry and prose through the study of a critical essay.

Bibliography
The program and bibliographical references will be indicated at the beginning of the lessons. The detailed and definitive program will be inserted at the end of the lessons in the Elly portal.
Teaching methods
The teaching includes frontal lessons; depending on the number of participants, there is the possibility of seminar-type lessons (for example dedicated to the discussion of textual and audiovisual materials provided in advance by the teacher through the Elly portal).
Students are invited to actively participate in the lessons, intervening with questions and observations relating to the topics considered.
Assessment methods and criteria
At the end of the lessons there is a final test in written form, possibly followed by an oral integration, which has the aim of allowing the teacher to evaluate: a) knowledge of the essential lines of some historical-literary periods; b) the ability to read and interpret complex texts; c) the degree of autonomous re-elaboration of the teaching contents and bibliography; d) the acquisition of an adequate ability of expression in the Italian language in relation to the contents of the lessons, according to parameters of grammatical correctness, argumentative coherence, lexical breadth and relevance, use of technical terminology.
The test is normally divided into three sections: 1) paraphrase and brief commentary on a poetic passage; 2) specific questions on the contents of the course which include both multiple choice answers and synthetic answers in discursive form; 3) development of a theme or short essay on a historical-literary topic, with the possibility of choosing between 2-3 options indicated by the teacher (for example: illustration of the literary production of an author, presentation of the characters of a historical-literary period or a literary genre etc.).
Each section is assigned a score appropriate to the complexity and extent of the questions; the individual evaluation parameters will be explained at the beginning of the test. The exam grade, expressed in thirtieths, is given by the sum of the scores for each section. In some cases, indicated from time to time by the teacher, the written test must be followed by an additional oral test (for example in the case in which the outcome of the written test is not fully sufficient or does not allow the commission to evaluate the preparation in relation to some macro-topics of the program).

The test is considered insufficient in the event that the minimum knowledge of the course contents, the ability to independently rework, the ability to understand and basic analysis of literary texts, adequate expressive and argumentative ability, as well as in the case of serious linguistic errors are lacking. . A sufficient evaluation (18-23/30) is determined by the acquisition of the minimum contents of the course and by a basic level of autonomous re-elaboration (including the ability to establish simple connections between the works analyzed in class), by the acquisition of a minimum textual analysis skills and an inconsistent command of the Italian language. Similarly, mid-range scores (24-27/30) are assigned to students who demonstrate that they have a more than sufficient (24-25/30) or good (26-27/30) level of the indicators. of evaluation listed above, while the highest scores (from 28/30 to 30/30 with honors) are assigned based on the demonstration of a level from excellent to excellent. In particular, honors are awarded to the tests that achieve the maximum score in each section and which allow for the verification of excellent expressive and argumentative ability and an excellent level of autonomous re-elaboration of the teaching contents.
Other information
It is possible to include this course in the study plan also as an elective exam, if the Italian Literature exam has already been taken.
