Learning objectives
The course is aimed to provide the student the basics and the interpretation of the diagnostic methods in the fields of clinical and infectious diseases, in companion and large animals. Student will acquire the skills to approach the clinical cases with the most suitable methodologies.
The course is aimed to:
D1 - Knowledge and understanding
The student has to demonstrate knowledge of the essential elements of diagnostic methodologies and acquire the ability to interpret the data obtained from the diagnostic tests of infectious and internal diseases of pet and farm animals.
D2 - Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the training activity the student must be able to discuss the diagnostic procedure of a case of infectious and internal medicine disease.
D3 - Making judgements
The student should be able to identify autonomously the most appropriate diagnostic procedures and methodologies for the animal diseases correct diagnosis.
D4 – Communication
At the end of the training activity, the students should be able to express themselves with good lexicon properties in relation to diagnostic procedures and diagnostic methods for animal diseases.
D5 - Lifelong learning skills
At the end of the training activity, the students should be able to update on the diagnostic procedures of animal diseases.

Course unit content
In the course will be treated the essential elements of the methodology for evaluating the immune response during infectious diseases and response to vaccination protocols; the generalities of mycology and the main fungal diseases of medical-veterinary interest; the approach to the assessment of antibiotic resistance through the interpretation of the sensitivity data to the disc-diffusion and MIC tests will also be discussed.
Clinical cases of patients hospitalized at the OVUD will be presented and discussed, in particular the learning of the decision-making process that leads from the anamnesis to the diagnosis will be evaluated through the interpretation of haemato-biochemical, endocrinological, and microbiological tests in companion animals.

Assessment methods and criteria
The assessment of the achievement of the objectives set by the course includes an oral and/or written test, where the student must answer 3 questions, addressing the aspects:
1 question relating to: Essential elements of microbiological diagnosis of the most important animal diseases;
1 question relating to: evaluation and use of serological tests in the diagnosis of infectious diseases in animals; methodology for evaluating the immune response during infectious diseases and in vaccination protocols.
1 question relating to: discussion on the decision-making process that leads from the anamnesis to the diagnosis through the interpretation of the haemato-biochemical, endocrinological, and microbiological tests in companion animals
The aim of the exam is to ascertain whether the student has achieved the objective of knowledge, understanding of the contents, the ability to apply the knowledge acquired, to know how to communicate it adequately and to know how to use it extensively independently.
The result of the exam is associated with the global evaluation of the answers provided by the student and is expressed as judgment of eligibility.
Students diagnosed with specific learning disabilities (DSA), certified in accordance with law n° 170/2010 will be granted the concessions provided for by law
