Learning objectives

• to teach students of veterinary medicine the basic principles (classification, epidemiology, life cycles, immunology) of parasitology

Course unit content

classification, epidemiology, life cycles and immunology of the following parasite groups: 1)Nematoda: Trichostrongyloidea, Strongyloidea, Metastrongyloidea, Ascaridioidea, Filarioidea, Trichuroidea, Oxiurioidea; 2)Trematoda: Fasciola heaptica, Dicrocoelium dendriticum; Paraphistomum spp; 3)Cestoda: Taenidae, Anoplocephala spp, Moniezia spp, Diphylidium caninum. 4) Protozoa: Sarcomastigofora, Apicomplexa, Piroplasmidae; 5) Arthropoda: Insecta (biological vectors, fleas and agents of myasis), Acarina (mites and ticks).

Teaching methods

The course consists of 30 hours of classroom lectures with powerpoint slides, and 6 hours of practical laboratories (for a total of 7 CFU x 12 hrs./CFU).
Slides are available on Elly and off course students are advised to verify these.

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the objectives described above wil be evaluated through oral examination. the exam will consist of three questions on general themes (including identification of a parasite) and one question for each phylum discussed (Helminths, Arthropods and Protozoa). Each question is worth 5 points, for a maximum total of 30 pints (or 31 in the case of laude).
