Learning objectives
At the end of the course, students will have acquired the tools to be able to reflect critically on Portuguese, on its historical evolution and on its
polycentric specificity. Furthermore, they will have developed basic receptive skills in the two varieties (PE and PB) and will have chosen the variety in
to develop a productive competence, being, therefore, able to understand, produce and translate written and oral texts of
elementary difficulty. Such knowledge and skills will be acquired through regular participation in lessons and other activities
supplementary didactics.

Course unit content
Introduction to the study of the Portuguese language (European Portuguese PE and concepts on Brazilian Portuguese PB). The course aims to address the historical and socio-political evolution of Portuguese in the European and non-European context. The aim of the course is to introduce the beginner student to the linguistic space of Portuguese expression, providing him with the essential historical-cultural and linguistic-grammatical tools necessary to start undertaking a complete and satisfying training course. The lectures of the teacher, in mod. A, will present the concept of "Lusofonia" (spread of the Portuguese language in the world) and will introduce to the history of Portugal and the Portuguese language, following the diachronic path of the fundamental phases of their formation in the light of their geographical and cultural space. In the mod. B, the teacher will address the concepts of linguistic variation, norm, and linguistic bias, observing them in their theoretical dimension and in the reality of Lusophonia, with particular attention to the complex and stratified Brazilian sociolinguistic reality. The exercises carried out by specialized mother-tongue personnel will propose the study of the basic grammatical structures of the contemporary Portuguese language, both from the descriptive-normative point of view and in a contrastive Italian-Portuguese perspective, in which we will see elements of phonetics, essential vocabulary, morphology, verbal system, elementary and paratactic syntactic structures.

Teaching methods
Frontal lectures. The lectures will be supported by audiovisual contents: pictures of authors, texts, events and locations, documentaries, readings, and videos regarding literary works, video lectures. Audiovisual contents in Portuguese language have Italian or English subtitles. This material, contained in Power Point presentations, is to be considered an integral part of the reference bibliography and will be regularly loaded on the Elly page of the course.
Students will also attend practical lessons held by foreign language assistants throughout the whole academic year.
Assessment methods and criteria
Evaluation of the knowledge and skills acquired during the course will be carried out by means of a preliminary written test at the end of the academic year. The knowledge and competences that will be evaluated are as follows: written competence in the Portuguese language corresponding to the level A2++ (6 CFU) orB1(12 CFU) of the Common European Framework of Reference. The preliminary written text evaluation will be considered insufficient if the student is found lacking in any of the language skills; an insufficient evaluation (less than 18/30) does not permit access to the oral examination, which consists in a free interview. The final evaluation considers the competences gained in the preliminary written test. During the oral exam, the student will be asked some questions aimed at verifying and evaluating the oral competence of Portuguese language acquired during the course.
A final evaluation of insufficient is determined by the lack on the part of the student: to demonstrate a minimum knowledge of the contents of the course; to achieve the required level of linguistic competence (A2 ++ or B1); to discuss and solve problems regarding the retrieval of information and decoding of complex texts, and to formulate independent critical judgements and opinions.
A final evaluation of sufficient (18-23/30) is determined if the student can show that he/she has mastered the basic notions and contents of the course and that he/she achieved a level of Portuguese that at least corresponds in part to the A2+++ or B1 level. An average mark (24-27/30) is awarded to the student who can demonstrate he/she possesses a more than sufficient (24-25/30) or good (26-27/30) command of the language and theoretical knowledge according to the above criteria of evaluation. The highest marks ( 28-30/30 and merit) are likewise awarded based on a particularly good to excellent command of the language and theoretical knowledge according to the above criteria of evaluation.
