Integrated course unit module: Infectious diseases II and avian pathology

Learning objectives

In accordance to Dublin Descriptor at the end of the course of Infectious Disesases II the student must have:
D1- Knowledge and understanding. In particular the student must Know aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical signs . The course aims to enable the student to know and understand the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention of viral diseases of veterinary interest, with particular interest for zoonosis
D2- Applying . knowledge and understanding. In particular the student must produce a diagnostic suspect and operate or properly address laboratory investigation at the aim of achieving a correct diagnosis. At the same time it's pivotal to notify law measure, if present.
D3 - Making judgement. The student should be able to collect the data complex that characterizes the disease and produce a critical personal analysis in order to produce a diagnosis and apply corrections that hinder the spread of the infection. In this sense, he must be able to set up an appropriate vaccination program for the situation he is called to handle.
D4- Communicative Skills. The student must have technical skills, but his ability to communicate with diagnostic and prophylactic information is clear in order to gain credibility with colleagues and clients.
D5- Learning Capacity. The student must have acquired a mentality that allows him to go beyond the notions learned during the course of studies. It should therefore be self-interested to participate in industry events, acquire updated texts and consult magazines.

Course unit content

Introduction to the study of viral diseases in domestic animals: basic concepts relating to the nature and classification of viruses, their pathogenic potential and the main investigation methods used in virology are presented.
Subsequently the course addresses major viral diseases of veterinary interest.

Introduction to the study of viral diseases in domestic animals: basic concepts relating to the nature and classification of viruses, their pathogenic potential and the main investigation methods used in virology are presented.
Special part: study of the main virus-related diseases in domestic animals (swine fevers, poxvirus diseases, herpesvirus diseases, adenovirus diseases, coronavirus diseases, orbivirus infections in sheep and horses, picornavirus infections, rhabdovirus infections, togavirus infections, the significance of so-called “non-conventional agents” or prions in domestic animal diseases).

Lectures and exercises in the laboratory and necropsy room.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course consists of an oral examination, The student must answer 3 questions, addressed to specific diseases and verification of a correct approach to field situations.
The aim is to ascertain if the student has a good knowledge of the topics of the course, has good communication skills and is able to use it
autonomously.
The result is assigned to the overall assessment of the answers from the student. The final mark is expressed in thirtieths.
Students with specific learning disability, certified according to the law n. 170/2010 will be granted the benefits provided by law.
