Learning objectives

D1 KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student, future veterinarian, must:
Know the physiological and pathological modification of maternal organism in relation to the pregnancy, partum, post-partum, breastfeeding. Must know the difference of estrous cycle between different species to perform artificial insemination. Must acquire the technique to obtain semen and to evaluate it.
D2 APPLAYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student MUST DEMONSTRATE BY HIMSELF THAT SHE/HE ACQUIRED:
a) The capacity (ability) to correctly assess pregnancy, partum and dystocia
b) The capacity (ability) perform artificial insemination and evaluation of semen in different animal species (canine, bovine, equine, swine)
c) The capacity (ability) to administer specific drugs appropriated to clinical conditions
D3 MAKING JUDGEMENTS
The student at the end of the educational program will be able to:
a) Describe and autonomously interpret clinical conditions during physiological and pathological pregnancy to establish the optimal moment to perform artificial insemination and evaluate of semen
b) Collect the anamnesis and put clinical signs in relation to a differential diagnostic trail
c) Formulate autonomously a prognostic opinion on the development of pathology and clinical conditions

D4 COMMUNICATION
The student at the end of the educational program will be able to:
a) Expose clearly, verbally synthetic and exhaustive concepts using appropriate technical terminology physiological and pathological of pregnancy, partum, post-partum, and therapeutic indications
b) Demonstrate the ability to exhibit to a composite auditorium (students, specialist professors) the fundamental knowledge of veterinary obstetric and artificial insemination techniques
D5 LIFELONG LEARNING
The student at the end of the educational program will be able to:
a) Consult and understand independently scientific paper other the textbooks
b) Independently perform a bibliographic consultation
c) To acquire a good familiarity of the subject to comprise the clinical and non-clinical arguments

Course unit content

General aspects of obstetrics and artificial insemination in domestic animals.

Full programme

OBSTETRIC
Pregnancy in farm animals: cow, horse, pig.
Pregnancy in small animal: dog and cat.
Diseases and complications during late gestation: fetal mummification, maceration fetal hydrops of fetal membranes, alterations in placental function.
The delivery in domestic animals
Maternal and fetal dystocia. Assistance (manual, instrumental drug).
Newborn care.
The afterbirth in various species. Cause and treatment in the retention of the placenta.
Control to prevent post-partum utero-ovarian diseases and ensure good recovery of reproductive function in livestock.

PATHOLOGY OF REPRODUCTION AND ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION
Historical notes on gynecology (teriogenology) veterinary and artificial insemination.
Sexuality and reproduction in domestic animals.
Fertility control and management breeding of livestock.
Behavioral aspects in male and female sexuality, control of oestrus and pregnancy and treatment with gonadotropic hormones.
Clinical evaluation of male and female genital tract (clinical, ultrasound, endoscopy, hormone assays).
Techniques of semen collection, evaluation of semen, fresh, chilled, frozen in various species.
Insemination techniques in various species.

Teaching methods

Lectures are delivered in the presence, in compliance with safety standards, training needs and the timetable indicated in the official calendar.
In order to facilitate the learning process of all students, with particular reference to working students and students belonging to the weaker groups, the teaching material includes the video recording of the lessons using the Teams platform and also with other audio-video material and links, prepared by the teacher and useful for improving the participation and inclusiveness of the training experience. This material is deposited on the specific platform with access reserved for students of the specific course.
The practical lessons are firstly carried out on reproductive organs coming from local slaughterhouses and later using live animals housed in the structures of the Department in full compliance with the rules of animal welfare, at the Educational Veterinary Hospital and in the field at affiliated farms.
The slides used to support lessons will be uploaded weekly on the Elly platform. Slides are considered an integral part of the teaching material. It reminds students not attending to check the available teaching material and the directions provided by the teacher through the Elly platform for practical activities students will be divided into four-five groups.
Bibliographic references of English-speaking international articles on breeding topics applied to animal husbandry and equine breeding will be provided.

Assessment methods and criteria

Exams and graduation sessions are held in presence, in compliance with safety standards. Except for students in quarantine or for international students who cannot move from their country of origin for health reasons.
The assessment of the achievement of the objectives involves an oral question.
The achievement of the objectives of knowledge and understanding of the contents will be verified (indicators 01-02). By discussing a clinical case, it will be ascertained whether the student has achieved the goal of applying the knowledge acquired. Students will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding, be able to apply them in order to demonstrate a professional approach to their work and possess the appropriate skills to support their arguments and to solve problems in studying the topic. They must also demonstrate the ability to collect (data collection forms) and interpret the data collected useful for determining independent judgments.
The assessment of learning in particular will take place:
1) Oral question on three open questions regarding the program carried out.
2) During the oral exam the student will have to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the essential elements of the reproductive cycles of domestic animals, also in the field of breeding and stable; artificial insemination techniques in domestic animals; of the mechanisms of physiological childbirth and assistance to the newborn in the various domestic species and finally the evaluation and management of bovine, equine and porcine seminal material. In addition, he will be called upon to demonstrate the knowledge and understanding acquired in identifying the problems of the reproductive management of a livestock farm and of prevention in the veterinary gynecological field.
3) The oral exam will be assessed with a 0-30 grade scale. In particular, during the test the degree of knowledge achieved in the subject will be evaluated, the ability to connect between the elements of reproductive physiology, the business management of reproductive events (management of estrus, application of artificial fertilization techniques, reproductive results, prevention of pathological events). Honors are awarded in the case of achieving the maximum score on each item to which the mastery of the disciplinary vocabulary is added. An exam with at least an overall score of 18/30 will be considered sufficient.
Students with a diagnosis of specific learning disorders (DSA) certified in accordance with Law 170/2010 are allowed to consult a reference text at their choice.
