Integrated course unit module: Diet and nutrition, diet and feed technology

Learning objectives

Acquire knowledge, understanding and skills related to the chemical and nutritional characteristics of feeds and the formulation of diets for animals.
Acquire skills to apply knowledge and understanding in the evaluation and formulation of diets for animals with particular reference to pigs and horses in the different phases of their production cycle
Gaining independence of judgment in the interpretation of pathological conditions related to metabolic dysfunctions.
Acquire communicative skills that will enable to deal clearly and with the appropriate terms the topics that will be submitted.
To acquire a learning ability that will enable a multidisciplinary approach to topics that will be submitted

Prerequisites

Have completed the examinations for the preparatory courses provided by the Teaching Regulations

Course unit content

The first part of the course is aimed at understanding the differences in the chemical composition of the foods that are used in the formulation of animal diets: Hays, silage, simple foods and their by-products
In the second part we present the systems of evaluation of the nutritional value of foods
In the third part shows the digestive and nutritional characteristics of pigs and horses as well as eating plans to be adopted in the early stages of the production cycle of pigs and horses

Teaching methods

During the lectures the student will learn to know and understand the differences between nutritional foods, the different nutritional requirements of pigs and horses in relation to the production cycle and how to formulate a ration.
During laboratory exercises students can accomplish independently and practical solutions to problems faced during the lectures

Assessment methods and criteria

The learning assessment will take place through summative assessment.
Method and type of test: oral exam lasting up to 30 minutes, composed of n. 5 questions. During the test the knowledge will be verified and the understanding of the topics covered in theoretical terms (Question 1 - descriptor 1) and application (Question 2 - descriptor 2), the ability to analyze hypothetical cases (Question 3 - Descriptor 3), the capacity of communication (Question 4 - Descriptor 4) and the ability to interpret scientific results (Question 5 - Descriptor 5), through the presentation of specific questions, images, case studies and data tables.
Evaluation scale: the evaluation scale goes from 0 to 30 and praise.
Weights and evaluation criteria: each satisfactory answer has the maximum value of n. 6 points; undated or incorrect answers have a value of 0; the punctuality, completeness and ownership of language in all the answers received, the achievement of praise.
Useful materials to support the test: the use of any useful material in paper or electronic form is not guaranteed.
Method of return of the test results: the vote of the oral test is communicated immediately at the end of the test itself.
The oral exam is planned to ascertain the achievement of the course objectives. The student must demonstrate to possess detailed competences on the themes that regulate the base of the animal feeding as well as mastery of the nutritional factors that can be cause and / or associate causes of the main technopathies of livestock. Through questions concerning the role of nutrition in the performance optimization process and in the prevention of nutritional diseases, it will be ascertained whether the student has obtained the help of applying the acquired knowledge
