Course unit content

At the beginning of each shift all trainees must be present at the Infectious Diseases Unit at 8.30 (Coordinator Prof Cavirani). They will be divided into two groups, one of which will go to the Unit of Infectious Diseases and the other to the Unit of Veterinary Pathological Anatomy, the two groups will alternate themselves every two weeks.
The training of Animal Infectious Diseases takes place at the laboratories of the Unit of Infectious Diseases. Trainees must wear a lab coat
PRATICAL ACTIVITY Bacteriology: Isolation of bacteria from pathological samples. Bacteria typing by biochemical test (API system). Test of antibiotic sensitivity (Kirby-Bauer test). Virology: Cell cultures preparation. Evaluation of viral cythopatic effects. Viral detection on fecal samples by using kit on site.
Serology: Rosa bengala test. Serumneutelization test Indirect. ELISA test. Indirect Immunofluorescence test. Microagglutination test. Interpretation of serological test results. Vaccinolgy: Simulation of a program of immunization: vaccination program to control the main respiratory pathogens on the basis of the results of serological investigations carried out in a herd showing respiratory problems.

The internship takes place in the Unit of General Pathology and Veterinary Pathology Anatomy in the histopathology laboratories and in the necropsy room (Room F) of the Department of Veterinary Science. Trainees to enter the necropsy room must be protected by the Personal protective equipment (PPE) provided by the Department. Trainee is prepared with a lesson dedicated to safety and health in the workplace "Legislative Decree no. 9 April 2008, n. 81, Text coordinated with Legislative Decree no. August 3, 2009, n. 106 "which is completed with the guided tour in the Necropsy Room and Histopath lab.

ACTIVITIES OF THE INTERNSHIP

Cadaveric diagnostics
Execution of a necropsy, accompanied by the collection of biological samples (tissues and fluids) for ancillary investigations . Drafting the necroscopic report under the supervision of the contact person or her delegate;

Examination of an isolated pathological organ

Examination of an isolated pathological organ accompanied by tissue or fluid sampling for ancillary investigations. Drafting of anatomo-pathological report under the supervision of the contact person or her delegate;

Preparation techniques for biopsy samples

Knowledge of technical procedures for the preparation of cytological, histological and immunohistochemical preparations (cutting, processing, inclusion, sectioning, coloring of the preparations).

Microscopic diagnostics
Observation and interpretation of cytological slides (diagnostic cytological samples and cytological non-diagnostic samples, diagnosis and classification of inflammatory exudates, recognizing and identification of neoplastic cells) and histopathological preparations. In addition to the routine histopath-cytological diagnostic session, the trainee also has access to the histological and cytological archive.
