Learning objectives
The course aims to enable the student to know and understand the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and prevention of infectious diseases of veterinary interest, also in order to enable the students ability to use the knowledge and understanding of issues to emerging infectious diseases.
Aetiology, clinical signs, epidemiology in avian diseases; measures of direct and indirect prophylaxis; different vaccine typology and use of vaccination in control programs of avian diseases.

Course unit content
Introduction to the study of viral diseases in domestic animals: basic concepts relating to the nature and classification of viruses, their pathogenic potential and the main investigation methods used in virology are presented.
Subsequently the course addresses major viral diseases of veterinary interest.
The course is aimed at teaching knowledege and understanding of the basics of aetiology, clinical signs, epidemiology in avian diseases; measures of direct and indirect prophylaxis; different vaccine typology and use of vaccination in control programs of avian diseases. The student will also learn to apply the acquired knowledge and understanding in avian diseases.

Assessment methods and criteria
The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course consists of an oral examination. The questions deal with specific diseases and verification of a correct approach to field situations.
