Average calculation

The average that is sent to the Commission on the day of graduation, for all courses in the new system (i.e. first-cycle degree course + Master's degree) is the weighted average of the marks achieved.

Procedure for calculating the average

The average that is sent to the Commission on the day of graduation, for all courses in the new system (i.e. first-cycle degree course + Master's degree) is the weighted average of the marks achieved. The procedure for calculating your weighted average consists of:

  • multiplying the grade for each exam by the number of ECTS credits for that exam;
  • adding the results of the multiplications;
  • dividing by the number of ECTS credits.

The Language Course calculates the ECtS credits obtained from examinations that entitle you to a final grade, so you multiply all examination grades by the corresponding ECTS credits and divide by the total number of ECTS credits from the examinations with a final grade. The result will be the weighted average in base 30. The Esse3 system updates the grade average from time to time (which the student can view in his or her personal area), but the average will only be corrected after all examinations have been passed.

Example:
exam 1, grade 28, ECTS credits 12 = 28*12 = 336
exam 2, grade 24, ECTS credits 6 = 24*6 = 144
exam 3, grade 30 with honors, ECTS credits 9 = 30*9 = 270 weighted average of these grades = 336+114+270 / 12+6+9 = 750/27 = 27.777

Note:

  • honors do not add to the grade (30) achieved, so 30 with honors = 30;
  • the degree committee decides which additional points, if any, to assign to the starting weighted average. Starting with the 2020 summer degree session, students who pass the final assessment test of the INFODOCPASS (EduOpen) + BIBLIOPATENTE2 (Elly) pathway with a satisfactory result (marks of 60/100 and above) will be entitled to one merit point for the positive rounding of the mark awarded by the Degree Committee to the final paper. In the event of a test mark of 85/100 or higher, two rounding points will be awarded by the committee on the evaluation of the paper
  • the weighted average being calculated to three decimal places without rounding.
