Learning objectives

At the end of the course, students must have acquired the tools to reflect critically on the topics, based on the historical evolution and polycentric specificity of the Portuguese language.
Such knowledge and skills will be acquired through regular participation in lessons and other supplementarand teaching activities.

Course unit content

Introduction to the study of the Portuguese language (European Portuguese PE and notions of Brazilian Portuguese PB), in a diachronic and synchronic and diatopic perspective.

Full programme

In the mod. An introduction will be made to the history of the Portuguese language, following the diachronic path of the fundamental phases of their formation, in light of their geographical and cultural space.
• The Portuguese-speaking world: variation over time and space
• From Latin to vernacular: lexical, morphological and phonetic changes
• From “Galician-Portuguese” to “Old Portuguese”
• From "Middle Portuguese" to "Classical Portuguese"
• Grammars and the “norm”
• The Portuguese language between the 19th and 20th centuries

In the mod. B we will address concepts of linguistic variation, norms and linguistic preconceptions, observing them in their theoretical and practical dimensions, with particular attention to the complex and stratified Brazilian sociolinguistic reality.

Teaching methods

- Seminar activity (text analysis)

The course will have a frontal character, being dedicated to the presentation of a historical-linguistic reality and the exposition of the main characteristics of "lusophony", and a collaborative one, through the analysis of texts and problems in seminar form.

All the material will be uploaded from lesson to lesson on the Elly page of the course.

The course will be accompanied by language exercises held by collaborators and linguistic experts during both semesters.
