Course unit content

After having addressed the fundamental concepts and methods of the discipline, the course focuses on some particularly significant themes for the students' educational path through a critical perspective on the heritage production and "cultural objectification" processes. The insights will give students the opportunity to learn to "use" anthropology to understand the contexts in which they live, act and work.

Full programme

Introduction to main concepts and methods of the anthropological disciplines. The specificities of the anthropological discipline as 'intercultural par excellence' will be highlighted and particular attention will be paid to the "decentralization of the gaze" which produces a critical perspective. It will then go on the deconstruction of categories (such as culture, ethnicity, tradition) and on the analyses of the “cultural objectification" and of "heritagization” processes. Thanks to the discussion of ethnographic cases and seminars, it will be possible to understand how concepts, categories and processes operate both in Italy and on a global scale, and how they are incorporated and reproduced by both citizens and heritage professionals.
