Learning objectives

The students must acquire knowledge and understanding about the diagnostic capabilities offered by different diagnostic imaging techniques (radiology, CT, ultrasonography, RMN, scintigraphy) and about the discussed topics of surgical pathology. They should be able to understand the acquired data and discuss a differential diagnosis, applying knowledge and understanding, showing professional skills and being able to make judgements. Students must show communication and learning skills.

Prerequisites

Anatomy, physiology, general pathology knowledge

Course unit content

General topics will be discussed: ionizing radiation, x-ray unit, radiographic images: analogic and digital acquisition system, radioprotection, radiographic projection in small and large animal, ultrasonography, basic principle of CT, RMN, Scintigraphy. Indications for a correct approach in x-ray films reading and CT cases’ interpretation will be given for thorax/abdomen and skeletal system. Students are involved in small groups in practical session of ultrasonography, x-ray film reading session, discussion of CT cases, and practical session with the digital system. Topics of surgical pathology of different anatomical systems will be also discussed.

Teaching methods

frontal lectures/practical sessions

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral/practical examination: students will be asked to demonstrate that they have reached a good level of knowledge and understanding regarding the different diagnostic imaging techniques and surgical pathology , and they will be requested to discuss a x-ray films reading session/ultrasonographic examination/CT cases. They will be requested to apply their knowledge and understanding.
Students must be able to apply their knowledge and comprehension capacities, showing a professional approach to their work. They should have adequate skills in discussion of their ideas and in problems' solving. Students must be able to collect and discuss data, in order to develop their own independent judgements.
