Integrated course unit module: Infectious diseases II and avian pathology

Learning objectives

The course aims to allow the student to know and understand the essential elements of poultry production; the etiological, clinical, epidemiological, diagnostic and prophylactic aspects of poultry diseases.
D1 - Knowledge and understanding
The student will have to demonstrate to know the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and prophylaxis of infectious, parasitic and mycotic diseases of poultry; must be able to prepare and apply poultry vaccination protocols; should recall the EU and national regulations concerning infectious diseases of avian species.
D2 - Applying knowledge and understanding
At the end of the training activity, the student will have to demonstrate to be able to apply the differential diagnosis protocols to infectious, parasitic and mycotic diseases of poultry and to be able to discuss the management of infectious disease outbreaks on the basis of EU and national regulations.
D3 – Making judgementes
The student should be able to interpret clinical signs and gross lesions of avian diseases, placing them in the regulatory context where applicable. The student should also be able to assess the appropriate biosecurity and prophylactic measures
D4 - Communication
At the end of the training activity, the student must demonstrate that he / she can express himself / herself with lexicon properties in the field of avian pathologies concepts, including regulatory aspects.
D5 - Lifelong learning skills
The student should be able to update himself/herself and apply this knowledge in the field of etiological, epidemiological, diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic aspects of avian pathologies and the relevant national and EU Community legislation.

Course unit content

The course aims to allow the student to know and understand the essential elements of poultry production; the characteristics of the different poultry supply chains; hatchery management; biosecurity measures applied to poultry farms.
Poultry diseases of viral, bacterial, parasitic and fungal aetiology will be treated; the related diagnostic methodologies; the related vaccination protocols. In particular, the following diseases will be treated:
Colibacillosis, Staphylococcosis, Avian Cholera and other avian pasteurellosis, Salmonellosis, Avian Clostridiosis, Campylobacteriosis, Tuberculosis, Mycoplasmosis, Chlamydiosis.
Newcastle disease, avian metapneumovirus infections, avian influenza, infectious bronchitis, Marek's disease, infectious laryngotracheitis, Gumboro disease, avian encephalomyelitis, avian diphtheria-smallpox, retrovirus infections, adenovirus infections.
Coccidiosis, cryptosporidiosis, histomoniasis, helminthic diseases, ectoparasitic infestations.
Aspergillosis, candidiasis.
Community and national regulations on poultry diseases will be considered; categorization of poultry diseases in Community legislation, national control plans. Surveillance measures and the measures applied in the event of an outbreak of infectious disease in poultry will be considered.

The national and Community regulatory aspects related to avian diseases will be considered, both as surveillance plans and as management of outbreaks of infectious disease

Teaching methods

Oral lessons, seminars and practice, in presence, except for different sanitary provisions.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course involves a single exam with the teaching module of Infectious Diseases II.
The verification of the expected learning outcomes described by the indicators D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5 is carried out through an oral exam. The first part of the verification is of a practical nature and is aimed at recognizing organs and lesions viewed as photographic images. The second part of the exam is theoretical and aims to verify the candidate's knowledge, understanding, judgment and communication skills.
The student must answer 3 questions, addressing the aspects:
1 question relating to: recognition of organs and lesions from photographic images of poultry species
1 question relating to: infectious diseases (bacterial, viral or parasitic) of poultry species
1 question relating to: breeding, biosecurity, management of vaccination protocols, regulatory aspects in the management of infectious diseases of avian species

The aim of the exam is to ascertain whether the student has achieved the objective of knowledge, understanding of the contents, the ability to apply the knowledge acquired, to know how to communicate it adequately and to know how to use it extensively independently.
The result of the exam is associated with the global evaluation of the answers given by the student. The final grade, the result of the average of the three assessments, is expressed out of thirty.
Students diagnosed with specific learning disabilities (DSA), certified in accordance with law n° 170/2010 will be granted the concessions provided for by law.
