Analytical and logical-argumentative competence with reference to the models of knowledge and languages of art and media. Ability in analysis and discussion of the theories and models of contemporary aesthetics.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the general outlines of the history of contemporary philosophy and aesthetics, and in particular of the thought of the Frankfurt School.
Course unit content
The course deals with the analysis of Walter Benjamin's essay "The Work of Art in the Age of its Technical Reproducibility". This essay will be considered in terms of historical relevance within the context of the relationship between aesthetics and social theories, as it developed in the first half of the twentieth century especially in the context of the Frankfurt School. The course will also focus on the analysis of the internal dialectics of Benjamin's essay, in order to put them in tension with other thematic nodes afforded by the author in his general work, related to art and media.

Sec. IV. "Photography and Cinema" (pp. 205-270).
2) W. Benjamin, "L’opera d’arte nell’epoca della sua riproducibilità tecnica", Turin, Einaudi.
There are several editions published by Einaudi in different years; any edition will do. The student here is required to read ONLY the essay "L'opera d'arte nell'epoca della sua riproducibilità tecnica" (1936 version), in order to make a comparison with the first typed draft of the essay (1935-36), present in the volume "Aura e Shock" mentioned in point 1).
Teaching methods
Lecture in telepresence, which will also be recorded for possible asynchronous use; annotated reading of Benjamin's texts, in the same mode; discussion and exercises on sample texts.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination. First question chosen by the candidate. Average exam duration, approx. 30 min. The exam will take into account the skills acquired by the student, the display of his discursive capabilities and his logical accuracy in the discussion.
