Course unit content

Husserl and Scheler: Temporality and Personhood

Full programme

Among the basic problems of phenomenology, the way in which subject does experience of time plays a fundamental role. Indeed according to phenomenology, temporality is one of those founding assumptions from whose correct definition depends the claim of phenomenology to be an objectively valid research-method. Within this complicated framework Edmund Husserl and the other phenolonologists made efforts in analyzing the possibility-conditions of time-consciousness. Through the reading of Lectures on inner-time consciousness of Edmund Husserl and of some sections of Max Scheler’s Formalism in Ethics and Material Ethics of Value, the course is aimed to show the fundamental connection between personhood and temporality in the light of the most discussed claims addressed in the contemporary philosophical debate.
