Integrated course unit module: GENERAL PATHOLOGY, PHARMACOLOGY AND MICROBIOLOGY

Learning objectives

The teaching aims to provide the student with essential knowledge and understanding on the basics about general bacteriology and virology, as well as host-pathogen interactions.

Course unit content

General bacteriology. General virology. Transmission
of infectious diseases. Elements on infectious diseases of interest for
physiotherapists.

Full programme

General bacteriology:
The prokaryotic cell: general organization, morphology and physiology.
Reproduction of microorganisms. The microorganism/host relationship:
commensalism, symbiosis, parasitism. Microbial flora. Pathogenicity and
virulence. General virology: general characteristics of viruses, structural and chemical composition of virions, phases of the viral replication process.
Transmission of pathogens. Diagnosis of infectious disease.
Basic information on infections of skin, CNS, osteoarticular system.

Teaching methods

Lectures accompanied by visual aids will be used to convey critical information on the topics relating to the learning content.

Assessment methods and criteria

No interim exam is scheduled. Learning outcomes will be verified through an oral examination. The results of the examination will contribute to the final evaluation of the integrated course.
