Learning objectives

The course will provide students with the knowledge of the fundamentals of metric and stylistic analysis
Applied knowledge and understanding:
students will be able to apply the knowledge and understanding necessary to recognize and contextualize the main metrical and prosodic figures of Italian poetry. During the lessons we will analyze sample texts that will form the basis of the exam.
Autonomy of judgment:
students will develop skills for collecting and interpreting useful data to determine comparisons and autonomous analysis of poetic texts
Communication skills:
thanks to the skills acquired and the analysis and comparison of various critical-interpretative proposals, students will be able to organize information, ideas, problems and solutions necessary to face and communicate a sufficiently complete and autonomous analysis of a poetic text
Learning skills:
thanks to the acquired notions that provide the basis of the formal analysis of the texts, the students will develop learning skills necessary to continue with autonomy in literary studies

No prerequisites are required in addition to those of a normal preparation from high school

Course unit content

The course aims to provide the necessary skills in the metric and stylistic field to deal with the analysis of a poetic text. The lessons will alternate general concepts of prosody and metrics with reading and analysis of sample texts (in particular of Petrarca) , representative of the main metric forms. The list of texts analyzed and a specific bibliography will be provided during the lessons and made available on the Elly portal.

P. G. Beltrami, Gli strumenti della poesia, Bologna, il Mulino,
S. Fornasiero, Guida al Canzoniere, Roma, Carocci, 2001.
It is necessary to have an edition of Petrarch's Canzoniere
The texts read and commented in class, with relative minimum bibliography, will be uploaded on the Elly portal.

Teaching methods

The activities will take place in telepresence through the use of the Teams and Elly platforms. In particular, they will be
realized lessons in both synchronous (via Teams) and asynchronous mode (uploaded on the Elly page of the course).
Introductory lectures to the discipline will be accompanied by a reading and analysis exercise in which students will be encouraged to participate actively.

Assessment methods and criteria

The final test consists of an oral examination in which will be evaluated
- the competence acquired in the field of metrics and style; - knowledge of the texts examined in class; - the logical-argumentative skills of the student.
. The exam will be conducted starting from the analysis of one of the texts presented in class; from this point of departure more general observations will be developed. The student who does not show a knowledge of the basics of metrics will not be considered sufficient. The student who is able to handle the concepts and terms of the discipline with propriety will instead be considered sufficient (18-21;) those who show a greater capacity for critical processing will be judged in the good range; those who have significantly deepened the subject, demonstrating autonomous investigation skills, will be judged in the very good-excellent range (27-30).
