Course unit structured in the following modules:

Learning objectives

The course intents to be a first introduction to both disciplines; it means to sopply to basic knowledge about documental sources recognition.
Stutents will be abe to register archives and to recognise and describe several ancient scriptures from High Middle Age to Modern Times.
In the sametime they will know how to move in archives, both ancients and contemporary: we will approach the digital-borne archives and problems related to their programmation to their conservation.
Students will be oriented to work opportunities in archives management and will be able to deal with systematic research applied to others branch of knowledge

Course unit content

Archivistics: italian archive history, archival science approach, international standards of archival description, life of an archive, italian archival administration and organisation, archives and the digital era, exercises: municipality archives after the italian unification, professional prospectives

Paleography:
Historical “excursus” about the Latin writings of manuscripts from the ancient times to invention of printing. References to codicology and diplomatics. Reading and analysis of various writing with the help of traditional facsimiles and of digital reproductions of manuscripts now available on-line.

Full programme

the coursework will be presented at the first lesson.
Paleography module will be in the firts part of the II semester
Archivistic module will be in the second part of the II semester

Frontal lessons, exercises, guided lessons to libraries and archives

Assessment methods and criteria

For both modules: oral exam.
Archivistics: the exam will judge the learning of the lessons and the bibliography, as well as the exercise records (if possible)
Paleography: the exam consists in questions about the latin scriptuire history and the recognition and reading of one or more plates chosen by professor,
The judgement of the integrated class will be the average grade between the two modules
