Learning objectives
The main goals of the course are two: firstly provide the students with the skills and abilities needed to investigate contemporary Italian literature from multiple cultural perspectives in order to fully understand the roles and functions of the literary system of modernity: author, public, Critical and editorial mediation.
Second, acquire (or strengthen) the basic tools for understanding in order to analyze in order to narrative texts in its various articulations.
At the end of the course students, on the basis of acquired historical-literary knowledge and classroom workshops, should have acquired the ability to read and understand narrative texts, to grasp the connections between text and context, formulating analyzes that proceed from the Particular to the general context and vice versa.

Course unit content
THE SHORT STORIES IN MODERN LITERATURE: VERGA’S CASE
Contents:
The course consists of a wid introduction that will highlight the constitutive aspects that distinguish eighteenth-century literary production, making it a cultural product different from the literary work of previous centuries. Specifically, the analysis of the literary system of modernity will include: a historical-sociological study of the transformations that redefined the subjects (producers, mediators and users) of literature, from the aristocratic-gentile regime to the bourgeois age; An overview of the paths of restructuring in the hierarchy of literary genres; A review of literary experience in modernity, starting with the study of the narrative bond that characterizes Romanesque civilization.
The second part of the course is dedicated to the production of novels by Giovanni Verga, in light of the historical and critical reflections introduced in the previous lessons. After studying the figure and the work of this author, a large space will be dedicated to various novels of which on analysis will include reading and understanding the text (the fundamental narrative and stylistic tools), and on the other hand the story Of the literary and editorial context.

The lessons will take place through frontal teaching.
Assessment methods and criteria
The examination is oral and the vote is formulated by taking into consideration these three aspects: 1. General knowledge of the Italian literature of the second half of the nineteenth century given to the individual study (Bonavita and Casadei). 2. Understanding dynamics characterizing literary modernity (according to the coordinates provided in frontal lessons or, for non-attendants, in online lessons

3. Analyze and comment on one of the in-depth lesson narrative texts and upload them on the Ellylass platform undergoing renovation.
