Integrated course unit module: BIOSCIENCES

Learning objectives

The Module of Physics Applied to Physiotherapy has the goal to provide the students with knowledge and understanding of normal human motion. This is the basis for further goals: 1) understanding motion impairment and disability, and solutions and adaptations adopted in several pathological conditions; 2) substantiate the best strategies for planning and implementation of optimal rehabilitation programs, integrating the theoretical and applied aspects of the whole range of assistive technologies, mobility aids and orthoses (Knowledge and Applied Understanding).
The Module also aims to provide bases for the undertanding of increasingly used motion evaluation techniques (Making Judgement).

Course unit content

The first part fo the Module of Physics Applied to Physiotherapy deals with general concenpts about normal human motion, forces and their effects on posture and motion, statics and dynamics of forces, levers and pulley.
The second part deals with the kinesiology and biomechanics of the thoracic column, rib cage, pelvic girdle and coxofemeoral joint, knee, and foot, and with gait.
The third part deals with sholulder girdle, elbow and hand kinesiology and biomechanics, and with grasp or prehension patterns.

Teaching methods

The topics covered by the program module will be dealt with in the course of interactive lectures. The course will be accompanied by practical exercises in pairs, in order to enable the student to observe part of the situations outlined in theoretical form during lectures.

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the objectives of the Module will be assessed through a written test with both multiple-choice and open-ended questions and an oral examination. It will be ascertained whether the student has achieved the goals of knowledge and understanding of the contents of the module, ability to apply the acquired knowledge, and development of independent judgment in assessing and proposing solutions for different clinical conditions pertaining to the physiotherapist.
