Learning objectives
The course aims a critical scrutiny of crucial and basic questions in socio-psycho-pedagogical history of juvenile literature, also in its didactical facets, focusing on values and on possible suggestions of fear and prejudice sometimes present in juvenile literature, promoting advanced competences, enhancing sensitivity and awareness on the effects of reading on the subject in education, and on the better strategies of motivation-training to reading.

Course unit content
Choice and evaluation of children’s and juvenile books: the psycho-pedagogical approach. Essential characters of books for young age, effect of reading on young people’s personality, itineraries and educational-didactic strategies to form a reader.
Full programme
Through the reading of a series of juvenile classics and contemporary children’s books, the problem of essential characters of books for various phases of young age will be analyzed (considering language, style, contents and illustrations), focusing on possible effects of reading on emotions, attitudes, values and comprehension processes.... Strategies, tools and educational itineraries, aimed at forming a reader, will be proposed and discussed. The course will involve practical simulations and each student will be asked to prepare an individual research paper.

An individual research paper by the student is required. Students not attending the lessons are invited to contact the professor to establish their paper subject.
Teaching methods
Frontal lesson, seminars, reflections and critical discussions on researches conducted by the students. A trip to Juvenile Book Fair in Bologna under the guide of the teacher will be organized.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination and discussion of the research paper of the student.
