Learning objectives
Knowledge and understanding
The course aims to deepen the main legal and institutional profiles of the European Union and its substantive law, with reference to the four freedoms of movement and the most important common policies, also in the light of the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
The student, at the end of the course, should be able to understand how they relate:
- the basic treaties of the Union and the different acts that constitute the legislation derived;
- Union legislation and the national legislation of the Member States.
Applying knowledge and understanding
The student will be able to:
- orientate himself among the regulatory and legal sources of European Union law;
- find the Union's acts and decisions of the Court of Justice, understanding its effectiveness.
Making judgements
At the end of the course, the student should have acquired the ability of a critical approach to the sources of European Union law and to the case law of the system of judicial protection.
Communication skills
The student will be able to communicate effectively its arguments, using the specific legal language of the discipline.
Learning skills
The student must have developed a self-study method, fits a legal discipline in constant becoming.

Introduction (The European Union and its right. Origins and developments of the European integration process). The legal order of the European Union (General profiles. The institutional framework. Sources. Decision making process. The European Union law in the legal systems of the Member States). Protection og the rights (The judgments on the behavior of the Member States. Reference for a preliminary ruling). Objectives and competences of the Union (Values and objectives of the Union. Citizenship of the Union. The system of competences). Union’s policies (The internal market. The free movement of goods. The free movement of persons, services and capital. The area of freedom, security and justice). The Union's external action (General profiles). Italy's participation in the European integration process (General profiles. Organization and procedures).

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral exam.
The knowledge and understanding will be assessed with some questions to verify the actual knowledge of the study program.
The ability to apply the knowledge and the making judgement will be assessed discussing with the candidate about hypothetical cases that present issues relevant to EU policies treated by the course.
The communication skills will be assessed by evaluating the mastery of the discipline technical language.
Learning skills will be assessed by a cross evaluation of the answers given by the candidate during the oral exam.
