Learning objectives
The course will provide students with the analytical tools appropriate to the understanding of the main musical expressions of Western classical music, with particular reference to the production of the late nineteenth and first half of the twentieth century.
The learning of these instruments will be through analytical exercises - according to different methodologies and specifications - refer to compositions that constitute the view of the linguistic choices of various ages treated.

Course unit content
The course analyzes important vocal and instrumental works, for solo, small ensembles and groups variously constituted, to large choirs and orchestras. With particular attention will be analyzed modern and contemporary production. With regard to the repertoire late-tonal and post-tonal, and their formal choices, the course will provide the analytical tools essential to understand the evolution of language. Will be analyzed compositions belonging to the major schools and trends of the twentieth century: the French school (Debussy, Ravel), the Viennese School (Schoenberg, Berg, Webern), Russian School (Stravinsky, Scriabin, Prokofiev), new constructivism (Hindemith), relationship between classical and popular music (Bartók, Janácek), American experiences (Ives, Gershwin, Bernstein).

Assessment methods and criteria
The exam consists of the presentation of musical works analyzed during the course.
In particular, we evaluated:
- The ability to evaluate music and include it in the correct historical and stylistic context
- The knowledge of grammar and syntax of the language of music eras object of teaching
- Awareness and critical thinking in relation to reality and current music to the historical roots
- The ability to rationalize on specific issues and the correct exposure of the results
