Learning objectives

The course will provide the student with the basic tools to understand and analyze the main forms of western classical music, from the beginning of the eighteenth to the nineteenth century, with some references to the repertoire before and one related to the early stages of the overcoming of classic tonality. The learning of analytical techniques and the constant language of the pre-tonal, tonal and post-tonal music, will be made through analytical exercises pertaining to the most exemplary compositions that represent the evolution of European musical thought.

Course unit content

The course will preliminarily deal with music theory and at the same time introduce the analytical tools essential from the point of view of harmony (micro and macro), the melody, the figural invention, orchestration, formal organization, phraseological articulation. Next, it will consider the main analytical methods. Will be analysed compositions belonging to the main profiles of formal instrumental music (suite, sonata, theme and variations, short piece, study) and vocal forms (cantata, aria, Lied).

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam consists of the presentation of musical works analyzed during the course.
In particular, will be evaluated:
- the ability to evaluate music and include it in the correct historical and stylistic context;
- the knowledge of grammar and syntax of the language of music eras object of teaching;
- awareness and critical thinking in relation to the current musical reality and its historical roots;
- the ability to rationalize on specific issues and the correct exposure of the results.
