Learning objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the study of Law through the historical-systematic reconstruction of the main institutions that form the foundations of our legal system. Students are required to have a good command of both spoken and written Italian in order to achieve the required terminological precision. Knowledge of Latin is helpful but not essential.
Prerequisites
The exam in Roman Law Institutions, together with the exam in Private Law Institutions, is preparatory for all other exams, except those belonging to the following scientific subject areas: IUS/19 (History of Italian Law), IUS/20 (Philosophy of Law) and SECSP01 (Political Economy).
Course unit content
The course aims to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of law as they emerged from the work of roman jurists.

Bibliography
M. MARRONE, Istituzioni di diritto romano, ed. Palumbo, Palermo (any recent edition). For attending students a portion of the textbook will be replaced by handouts.
Teaching methods
In addition to the lectures, impromptu oral and written tests will be included. These are strictly reserved for attending students, and will not bring about a reduction in the exam programme. However, positive assessments will be taken into consideration in the final grade.
