Integrated course unit module: MIDWIFERY BASIC I

Learning objectives


Knowledge of pregnancy physiology from a maternal and embryonic/fetal point of view; being able to apply and describe the basics of obstetric care both in hospital and territorial settings.

Prerequisites

Course unit content


The physiological foundation of pregnancy from conception to the onset of pregnancy; pregnancy from a biological and nutritional point of view for the mother and the fetus; the concept of pregnancy health and the physical, hormonal and emotional changes of the pregnant woman, with particular focus on the changes during the three pregnancy trimesters.
Basic obstetric care and counselling.

- Pre-conceptional counselling
-Pregnancy diagnosis. Presumptive, probable and positive signs.
- Obstetric history and pregnancy file
-Definition of gestational / conceptional age.
-Physiological changes during pregnancy: hormonal, physical, psycho emotional changes
-Characteristics of the three pregnancy trimesters
-Hygiene and lifestyle during pregnancy.
- Pregnancy over term
- Leopold’s maneuverd, Symphysis-fundus height, FHR auscultation.

Assessment methods and criteria


The student’s knowledge and thorough understanding of the course topics and her/his ability to apply them to the occupational contexts will be assessed by questions related to the course content. Failed answers to one or more questions or failure to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the subject will preclude the successful completion of the exam. In the event of passing the exam, an evaluation on the achievement of the objectives (expressed in thirtieths) will be given, which will contribute to the final grade of the course.
