Learning objectives

To develop or consolidate students' English skills related to grammar, vocabulary, language functions, reading and listening comprehension corresponding to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

According to the CEFR, at level B1 the user can understand the main points of clear standard written and spoken input in the foreign language on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc., and can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken.

Prerequisites

Preparation for the B1 level assumes that an elementary knowledge of English has already been acquired (at least at the A2 level).

Course unit content

This course develops general English skills to the B1 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Full programme

Detailed lists of the grammar and vocabulary topics expected for the B1 level can be found in the online self-study course “PREPARAZIONE IDONEITÀ INGLESE B1” on the University Language Centre Elly portal (for constantly updated links to the courses on Elly, see https://www.cla.unipr.it/it/corsi/corsi-idoneita-curricolare/inglese/78/).

Bibliography

Suggested grammar book: R. Murphy, L. Pallini, Essential Grammar in Use (Cambridge University Press).

Suggested vocabulary book: S. Redman, English Vocabulary in Use: Pre-intermediate and Intermediate (Cambridge University Press).

Teaching methods

Every semester, the University Language Centre organizes courses in preparation for English exams, held by native language teachers.

In addition, the online self-study course “PREPARAZIONE IDONEITÀ INGLESE B1” is always available on the University Language Centre Elly portal: it consists of video lectures, grammar and vocabulary explanations and practice exercises on exam topics with automatic correction, including exam mock tests.

Detailed information about the courses can be found on the University Language Centre website at https://www.cla.unipr.it/it/corsi/corsi-idoneita-curricolare/inglese/78/.

Assessment methods and criteria

The “idoneità” is a pass/fail exam (not graded) which assesses grammar, vocabulary and receptive skills (reading and listening) at the B1 level. It is a computer-based multiple-choice test; to pass it, at least 60% of the questions must be answered correctly.
For further information about the exams, see the University Language Centre website at https://www.cla.unipr.it/it/idoneita-linguistiche/idoneita/153/.

Other information

It is possible to be exempted from the exam by presenting previously acquired external language certificates. For the list of recognized certificates and the procedure to follow, see the University Language Centre website at https://www.cla.unipr.it/it/idoneita-linguistiche/riconoscimento-certificazioni/166/.
