Learning objectives

At the end of the course, students acquire knowledge on contemporary Italian literature (the second half of the nineteenth century and the whole of the twentieth century).
Knowledge and understanding: students will develop knowledge and understanding skills in field of contemporary Italian literature concerning the basic contents of the discipline, analyzed in their historical and critical perspective, from the literary, thematic, stylistic and narratological point of view.
Knowledge and understanding skills applied: students will be able to apply the knowledge and skills of understanding acquired in order to organize an organic critical discourse that takes into account the numerous aspects characterizing the literary movements. At the same time, students will reinforce their ability to understand literary texts and particularly narrative texts (novels and short stories), and refine their skills in solving problems with reading, understanding and analyzing new texts.
Autonomy of judgment: students will develop textual interpretation skills aimed at the formulation of aesthetic judgments, but also in the contextualization of texts in their respective cultural and literary fields.
Communication skills: thanks to the textual analysis exercises proposed in class and discussed in a workshop way, students will develop the communication skills in relation to the acquisition of a language appropriate to the subject, the ability to link different fields and disciplines (history, literature, philosophy, etc.), to the possibility to express motivated aesthetic judgments on the read texts.
Ability to learn: thanks to the general system of the course, i students will develop cultural learning skills and textual analytical skills, both necessary to continue independently in the knowledge of contemporary Italian literature and to implement the reading of the Nineteenth and Twentieth century texts.

Course unit content

After a first part dedicated to outline the historical-sociological coordinates of literary modernity,
the course will outline a picture of the literary panorama of the second half of the nineteenth and twentieth century, through some fundamental junctions, such as: verismo, modernism and realism. Of each considered historical-literary moment, the cultural matrices, the characteristic poetics and some key texts will be analyzed, including the authors indicated in the exam program.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam

The average marks (24-27 / 30) come
assigned to the student who has a level more than
sufficient (24-25 / 30) or good (26-27 / 30)
The highest marks (from 28/30 to 30/30 and honors) are awarded based on the demonstration of a level from good to excellent in both parts of the exam.
