Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the student with the basis to understand the concepts of risk and risk factors for human health in the light of the legislation on safety and prevention of risks for workers, providing the essential elements for the preventive measures to be taken in relation to the specific related occupational risks treated: chemical, physical, biological and organisational/transversal. The course aims to allow the student to apply the knowledge and understanding acquired within the framework of future professional activity.

Course unit content
The course aims to address the issues necessary to know the causal links between exposure to risk agents and the appearance of adverse health events in terms of accidents and occupational diseases. The main instruments of prevention and protection of health with regard to specific occupational risks, with particular reference to health, will be considered. The course provides the fundamental knowledge related to current legislation on safety, health and safety in the workplace.

Introduction to Occupational Medicine and general concepts. Historical notes on the birth and evolution of Occupational Medicine. Current legislation on the protection of safety and health at work. Occupational accidents and diseases. Biological risk: definition of biological agent, characteristics and classification of biological agents according to Legislative Decree 81/2008. Main biological agents present in the health sector. Biological accident and immunoprophylaxis. Standard precautions. Chemical risk: definition of chemical agent. Carcinogens and mechanism of action. Notes on toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics. Main chemical risks in the health sector: latex, glutaraldehyde, formaldehyde, liquid nitrogen. Organisational/transversal risk: shift work. Related stress-work. Burnout. Physical risk: ionizing radiation. Radiation protection.

Teaching methods
During the lectures will be presented and discussed the topics, indicated in the program trying to involve the student so that he can be an active part of the lesson. In compliance with safety standards, the lessons will take place in presence with the possibility of using them even remotely in synchronous mode (via Teams), compatible with the governmental and University regulations regarding the emergency COVID-19. The teaching material, on a weekly basis, will be deposited on the specific platform reserved for students (Teams or Elly) and will include: iconographic presentations, audio-video support or video recording of the lessons. The teacher is available for clarification on the lessons by appointment (agreed by e-mail) in the office or at a distance via Teams.
Assessment methods and criteria
The assessment of the achievement of the objectives of the course includes an oral examination. Through questions regarding the course contents it will be ascertained whether the student has achieved the objective of knowledge and understanding of the contents and whether he has achieved the objective of applying the acquired knowledge. If due to the persistence of the health emergency it is necessary to adopt the remote mode for the examinations of profit, we will proceed as follows: oral questions at a distance, through the platform Teams (guide http://selma.unipr.it/).
