Learning objectives

The course aims to promote:
• Knowledge of the main psychological and emotional effects derived from the experience of illness and hospitalization during adolescence
• Knowledge of the main psychological and emotional effects of the adolescent patient with cancer
• Knowledge of the stages of disease processing
• Knowledge of hospital psychology in the pediatric context
• Knowledge of the levels of assistance in the psychological context
• Knowledge of the role of the psychologist in the care process.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of developmental and adolescent psychology.

Course unit content

The laboratory aims to deepen the psychological and emotional experience of adolescents with the disease.
In-depth study on the adolescent cancer patient.
Knowledge of hospital psychology and the role of the psychologist will be provided.

Full programme

Contents will be dealt with aimed at understanding how illness and hospitalization fit into the adolescent's growth and autonomy path, analyzing the psychological and emotional experiences derived from these conditions. The experience of the adolescent cancer patient will also be studied in depth.
The phases of elaboration of the disease and the levels of psychological assistance will be discussed.
The main concepts of hospital psychology in the pediatric context and the role of the psychologist will be explored.

Bibliography

The study of the topics of the laboratory will be through the study of some research papers that will be identified and analysed with the students during the laboratory.

Teaching methods

The lessons will take place in the presence with the possibility to enjoy the lessons also at a distance in synchronous and asyncrhonous mode (Teams).
Laboratory includes:
frontal teaching;
moments of interaction aimed at stimulating the active participation of students;
proposal of video material aimed at individual reflection and group discussion.
In the event that the worsening of the current health emergency (Covid-19) does not
make it possible the lessons at presence, they will be totally online at distance, in synchronous and asyncrhonous mode (Teams).

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam, without vote, involves the drafting of a short paper (3/4 pages) on the main contents of the laboratory. The test is aimed at understanding whether the student has acquired the main concepts presented. The laboratory is approved if the student shows that he has learned the contents covered and if he shows reflective skills in deepening the subject.
