Learning objectives

The student should demonstrate knowledge and understanding (Dublin descriptor I) of the basic principles of Neuroscience. To this pourpose, the course aims to provide the student with an adequate understanding of: 1. the theoretical and procedural basis of neuroscience research, 2. The student should be able to learn the principles of neuroscience (5th Dublin
descriptor), apply the acquired knowledge (2nd Dublin descriptor), should be able to independently evaluate simple theoretical problems underlying neuroscientific experimental hypotheses (3rd Dublin descriptor), and be able to communicate them (4th Dublin descriptor).

Course unit content

This course is designed to describe the theoretical, procedural, and interpretive elements that underlie neuroscientific research in cognitive and interdisciplinary domains.

Full programme

Relation between perception and action. Cognitive functions of motor cortical areas. Understanding the meaning and goal of observed actions. Action, gesture, and goal. Relationship between understanding of behavior and motor repertoire. The consequences of gestures and the visual arts. The emotional body language (EBL). Relation between emotions and actions. Emotions, sensations, and the visual arts. Emotion recognition and trauma.

Bibliography

The slides of the lectures are a major part of the course material and are uploaded by the teacher on the Elly platform at the end of each lecture.

Teaching methods

Lectures will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. Supporting material will be available on the specific, student-reserved platform (Elly) and will include slide presentations, audio-video aids or video-recording of the lectures. In the event that the health emergency will prevent the conduct of teaching in attendance lectures will take place in telepresence through the use of the platforms Teams and Elly. In particular, lessons will be conducted in both synchronous mode (connecting to the Teams platform) and asynchronous (uploaded on the Elly page of the course). During the lessons in synchronous (direct) mode, mainly frontal moments will alternate with interactive moments with the students. During the lessons, the principles of physiology will be explained, and the main topics will be addressed with supporting digital audio/video material. During the lesson the students will be stimulated by the teacher to ask questions and comments both in synchronous mode (via microphone or chat) and in asynchronous mode via Elly.

Assessment methods and criteria

The achievement of the objectives of the course will be verified by an oral test. Questions about the content of the course will verify if the student has achieved the objective of knowledge and understanding of the content of the course. Oral test will be held on-site in compliance with safety standards, provided that further instructions on the ongoing health emergency are not implemented. In the event that the health emergency will prevent the conduct of teaching in attendance oral tests will take place in telepresence trough the Teams platform and it will be necessary, throughout the test, keep on the audio/ video connections. Before each test, after the expiring of the deadline for registration, all students will receive an email by Essetre, with the necessary instructions for connecting to the link of Teams. For any clarification students could contact Prof. Anna Kolesnikov: anna.kolesnikov@unipr.it
