Integrated course unit module: Childbirth care, puerperium and neonatology

Learning objectives

The course is meant to give the basic knowledge on midwifery care during low risk labor and delivery. Therefore it underlines the role of proper support to the pregnant and to the couple from the admission time to the exit from the delivery room, including the acceptance and care oh term healthy babies. The peculiar skills of a good midwife include the proper use of hands (touch, massage, encouragement, visit), eyes (observation, communication without word, control of environment), body (promotion and support free positions, ability in listening). Non-drugs painkiller strategies are investigated, as for example water utilization, free positions, use of voice, techniques of relaxation, according to available scientific evidences. The basic theory package is giving the absolutely necessary foundation to grow professionals able to preserve the birth as a natural and complex event ensuring safety and promoting health.

Care of term newborn: position, clearing of airways system, controlling heating and temperature, cord clamping, promoting bonding and skin to skin contact
Observation, first bathing, eye and vit K prophylaxis
