Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the acquisition of tools necessary to know and do research in the field of European and comparative criminal law, through the analysis of case law and doctrinal opinions on the same topics. At the end of the course students are expected to be able to proceed with the analysis of legal institutions and fundamental concepts of foreign legal systems, to know the basic principles of European criminal law, to carry out a comparison with the Italian legal system and to express themselves using the appropriate legal language.
Prerequisites
In order to take the European and Comparative Criminal Law exam, Italian students must have the followinf language skills: English Language B1, and have passed the following exams: Institutions of Private Law, Institutions of Roman Law Constitutional Law and Criminal Law 1.
Course unit content
The course will be focused on both general and special aspects of criminal Law, which will be considered comparing the solutions adopted in different law systems and the interpretation of the supranational courts, with particular regards to the case law of the European Court of Human Rights.

Bibliography
Notes taken in class and/or handouts published on the platform Elly (elly.gspi.unipr.it), about 150 pages overall. The lecturer will inform the students about the publication of decisions and other materials published on the platform Elly (elly.gspi.unipr.it).
Teaching methods
Lectures and seminars. In order to allow the students to attend the course with advancement, at the beginning of the course the professor will verify the preliminary knowledge of the students and plan a review of some fundamental notions and basic principles. Classes will be structured to encourage the active participation of students and the critical and comparative analysis of the case law, also discussing some important decisions of the European Court of Human Rights.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final summative assessment, with a mark out of thirty, consists of an oral exam in English that includes at least three questions, with reference to the topics covered in class and to the related material distributed by the teacher. The questions will aim to test the correct comprehension of what has been explained in class and to verify the knowledge of fundamental concepts of the subject. There are no intermediate exams.
