Learning objectives

The aim of this class is to achieve the basic knowledge on the relationships between music and European society through Middle Ages and modern age, and will focus on holy, devotional, and secular musical repertories.

Course unit content

Subjects: the emergence of musical writing and its graphical evolution in various social and cultural European environments; monody and polyphony in holy and secular contexts; teaching of music in medieval universities and the problematic writing of rhythm. Musical examples will be played in order to show their peculiarities.
