Learning objectives
At the end of the course students will have acquired advanced knowledge with methodological skills in the fields of latin language in order for critical methodology, translation techniques and critical reading and interpretation of Latin texts.
Knowledge and understanding:
Students will have acquired advanced knowledge in the field of Latin language. Morphology, lexicon, structures and linguistic register will constitute the focus of the class.
Comprehension and problem solving skills: Students will be able to apply the knowledge and understanding skills in individual work, through the preparation of a short research on a chosen topic, using the specific bibliography and appropriate methodologies.
Making judgements:
Students will be able to collect and interpret data to determine autonomous judgements in the field of texts by Latin authors, including cross-cultural and interdisciplinary thinking.
Communication skills:
Students will be able to clearly formulate, using appropriate scientific terminology, the results of their study and research activities; they will be able to formulate the judgments supporting their ratio
Learning skills:
Students will develop learning skills useful to continue studying also autonomously and in a self-directed way.
Prerequisites
Course requirement: 12 credits in the Latin language and literature SDA. Students who have already gained 18 credits in the same SDA must pass a preliminary written entry exam (“prova scritta di latino 2”).
Course unit content
The Senecan writing from the dialogues to the epistulae to Lucilium
Through the commented reading of texts chosen by the dialogues and the epistulae to Lucilium, the course intends to focus the attention on the linguistic and stylistic choices of Seneca in search of the most effective methods of persuasion in the path of education to knowledge.
The main characteristics of the Seneca prose will be highlighted.
Some specific aspects of Latin syntax and historical morphology will also be studied.

For LM students that will deal with a personal research, a specif bibliography will be provided.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons. Students will be encouraged to participate in classroom lessons through individual accounts and seminar.
Students will be guided towards the elaboration of a research paper through personal tutor sessions.
Assessment methods and criteria
The exam is oral and will touch upon each part of the programme.
The final assessment aims to test:
- proper reading and translation of Latin texts;
- critical and interpretation skills along with the ability to produce personal reinterpretation and interdisciplinary links;
- ability to give proper answers to given questions
- complexity of the topic selected for the research paper;
- oral proficiency; correct use of language.
Students will pass the exam only if they meet the first three criteria and answer correctly to at least 60% of the answers, in accordance with the other criteria.
