Learning objectives

The course aims to provide students with adequate knowledge about the elements
that characterize the library science and the bibliography with particular attention to the organization of libraries in Italy and the development of technologies for document processing.

(knowledge and understanding)
The course will introduce students to a critical understanding of the issues and technologies related to the library world. This knowledge will be achieved and supported with lectures, seminars, conferences, study visits, and will be screened with oral examinations.

(applying knowledge and understanding)
The study of methodologies and the techniques of library organization will produce an understanding of the structure and content of document management. This knowledge will offer document processing skills appropriate to library orientation and bibliographic instruction.

(making judgements)
At the end of the course the students, based on the analytical knowledge of both theoretical and technical system, should have acquired the ability to understand the library management issues as well as to learn the fundamental knowledge for bibliographic management.

(communication skills)
At the end of the course, students should have achieved the ability to communicate clearly and to use the appropriate technical vocabulary related to the issues of the course.

Teaching methods

The course consists of lectures in classroom. During the lectures the general issues relating to bibliography and library science will be discussed.

Assessment methods and criteria

The oral exam is a final evaluation of the topics covered in the lectures and the texts listed in course bibliography.
A fail is determined by the lack of an understanding of the minimum content of the course and/or the inability to express oneself adequately.
A pass (18-23/30) is determined by the student’s possession of the minimum, fundamental
contents of the course. Middle-range scores (24-27/30) are assigned to the student who produces evidence of a more than sufficient level (24-25/30) or good level (26-27/30) in the evaluation indicators listed above. Higher scores (from 28/30 to 30/30 cum laude) are awarded on the basis of the student’s demonstration of a very good or excellent level in the evaluation indicators listed above and also on the basis of the student’s ability in making independent judgments.
