Learning objectives


• The goal of the course is to provide the student with the knowledge and understanding of the essential elements that characterize labor and birth. Moreover the lessons will offer the theory basis to build the essential knowledges for midwives on birth care. The peculiar skills of a good midwife include the proper use of hands (touch, massage, encouragement, visit ), eyes (observation, communication without word, control of environment), body (promotion and support free positions, ability in listening). The basic theory package is giving the absolutely necessary foundation to grow professionals able to preserve the birth as a natural and complex event ensuring safety and promoting health.
• The course aims to enable the student to know and understand the essential elements of care and management of Puerperium Pathology.
Another key objective is the ability to apply knowledge and understanding during the tests d 'exam.

Course unit content


• The course deals with the intrinsic and extrinsic factors of birth, the times of labor, the phenomena that characterize it and the midwifery care during low risk labor and delivery. Therefore it underlines the role of proper support to the pregnant and to the couple from the admission time to the exit from the delivery room, including the acceptance and care of term healthy babies. Non- drugs painkiller strategies are investigated, as for example water utilization, free position, use of voice, techniques of relaxation, according to available scientific evidences.
• The course deals with the various diseases that may arise during the Puerperium and complicate it.
The Midwife’s important role and here tasks during the management of pathological event are contents importan.

Assessment methods and criteria


The student’s knowledge, topics’ comprehension and her/his skill to apply them on the occupational contexts will be evaluated by questions on the topics related to the course content. Failed answer to one or more questions or proved insufficiency of the basic knowledge on the subject will preclude the successful completion of the exam. In case of completion of the exam, an evaluation that contributes to the final grade of the course will be defined and it will be based on the achievement of the objectives.
