Learning objectives

At the end of the course students acquire basic knowledge on Italian poetry of the twentieth century and in-depth knowledge on sepia of the cuttlefish and the work of Montale.

Knowledge and understanding:
students will develop knowledge and understanding skills in
field of Italian poetry of the twentieth century, in the historical-critical perspective, and from the thematic, stylistic and metric point of view.

Knowledge and understanding skills applied: students will be able to apply the knowledge and skills of
understanding acquired in order to set up an organic discourse on twentieth century poetry. At the same time, students will strengthen their ability to understand poetic texts, and refine their skills in solving
problems with reading, analyzing and commenting on new texts.

Autonomy of judgment:
students will develop textual interpretation skills aimed at the formulation of aesthetic judgments, but also at the contextualization of twentieth century poetic texts in relation to poetics and contemporary movements.

Communication skills:
thanks to the textual analysis exercises proposed in class and discussed in a workshop way, the students will develop the communication skills in relation to the acquisition of a technical language that includes the knowledge of the metrical forms and the rhetorical figures present in the poems, which is also able to linking text and context, themes and poetics.

Ability to learn:
thanks to the general system of the course, i
students will develop the skills of textual analysis necessary to pursue autonomously the reading of 20th century Italian poetry.

Course unit content

Ossi di seppia and the poetry of Eugenio Montale.
A large part of the course will focus on the poetic collection Ossi di seppia by Eugenio Montale, read and analyzed in its thematic, stylistic and metric aspects. In the second part of the course, we will continue reading the Montalian work through the selection of some of the poems present in the following collections, read and commented on to outline the entire Montale route against the background of the Italian 20th century poetic context.

Assessment methods and criteria

Oral exam and written exam.
The written exam will precede the oral exam and will focus on the elaboration of a short essay (maximum 3 pages, ie 6,000 characters) on a poem by Eugenio Montale not commented in class. More specifically: at the end of the course on ellydusic a short list of poems will be published, among which the student can choose. The analysis must include:
- The connection between the chosen poetry and the collection of belonging.
- The explanation of the content and the paraphrase of the text.
- The metric, thematic, stylistic deepening of poetry, in relation with the author's poetics.
- Elaboration of a brief original critical thought on the text (alternatively: explanation of why poetry was chosen).
The paper must be delivered in paper format in the teacher's mail box, located at the Italianistic secretariat (open every morning), or alternatively sent by email to at least ten days before the oral exam.
The oral part will follow the written test.
The oral will focus on the discussion of the written and on the deepening of the poems commented during
the lessons, the bibliography in the program and the materials loaded on the platform.
An assessment of insufficiency is determined by serious problems of writing and interpretation of the poetic text (written part) and the lack of assimilation of the minimum contents of the course (oral part).
A sufficient evaluation (18-23 / 30) is determined by a
acceptable level in written production and oral presentation.
The average scores (24-27 / 30) come
assigned to the student who proves to possess a level more than
sufficient (24-25 / 30) or good (26-27 / 30) in both parts of the exam. In the case of discordant levels between the written and the oral, an average will be made between the two distinct judgments.
The highest scores (from 28/30 to 30/30 and honors) are awarded based on the demonstration of a level from excellent to excellent in both parts of the exam.
