Learning objectives

- Knowledge and understanding: students will deepen their knowledge and understanding in the field of Greek language and literature, in philological and linguistic studies and in the analysis and critique of literary texts in Latin and Greek, also from a perspective teaching. Particular attention will be paid to the linguistic, metric and stylistic aspects; knowledge of literature and specialized skills for the application of modern information technology to the world as the elements of advanced research in this field. The acquired skills will allow to elaborate and adopt original ideas.
- Knowledge and understanding: students will be able to acquire the skills and abilities to study language and literature. In particular, the reading of Greek and Latin texts of poetry and prose in critical editions, with the acquisition of more in-depth skills related to an autonomy analysis of critical apparatuses, will be studied in depth; students will also find the right skills to understand the problems of interpretation, through the complete possession of IT tools. The skills of understanding and skills in solving problems with new and non-family will be strengthened, in broader or interdisciplinary contexts related to their field of study.
- Autonomy of judgment: students will develop the ability to collect and interpret useful and specific data, including transversal reflections on cultural and intercultural, scientific or ethical and related themes. They will be able to integrate knowledge, manage complexity and make judgments about limited or incomplete information.
- Communication skills: thanks to the attention to communication skills, students will be able to communicate information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialists and non-specialists. He will be able to formulate conclusions clearly, supported by knowledge. They will also be able to explain the underlying relationship to their conclusions.
- Ability to learn: thanks to the general teaching system, which focuses on Greek and Latin languages and literatures, students will deepen the learning skills necessary to continue to study, in an autonomous and mainly self-directed way, in training courses permanent and continuous.

Prerequisites

GL mod. A: there will be a preparatory course ("Greek 0"), addressed to those who have not previously dealt with the study of the Greek language (IDEA project).
RL: no.

Course unit content

Greek Literature (= GL) "mod. A"GL mod. A: Euripides' Bacchae: text and interpretation.
Romance Literatures (= RL): After a brief Introduction about the 'matière antique' in Old french Literature of the XII century, the course's aim is to study, through selected , translated and commented texts, the Roman d'Eneas, based on Virgil's epic text but also deppely rooted in contemporary romance trends.

Bibliography

GL mod. A: For the text and the translation of Euripides’ Bacchae, reference editions will be recommended at the beginning of the course. The same is for the institutional part of the examination, with the history of Greek literature, two works at choice and an essay at choice.

Teaching methods

GL mod. A: The teaching method in use is appropriate to the specific needs of the subject which requires the communication of the main course contents through classes; discussion with the students about textual and exegetical problems; tutorial programs for the students.
RL: Academic teaching.
Students will be requested to collaborate during oral translations, according to their number.

Assessment methods and criteria

LG: the verification will take place during the final examination and will consist of an oral test on the different parts of the program with the aim of verifying:
1) security in reading and translating original texts; 2) the ability to interpret them from a linguistic, edcotic and content point of view; 3) the clarity of exposition, the ownership of speech and the appropriateness of the answers.
SAWCS: the exam consists of an oral and practical test on the different parts of the program and the discussion of an individual research agreed with the teacher.

The final grade is expressed in thirtieths and the student who does not demonstrate an adequate understanding of the essential points of the method or who will not be able to place the texts discussed in the historical-literary frame of reference will be considered insufficient. On the other hand, the student will be able to handle the concepts and terms of the discipline, discrete-good (22-26), who will show a greater capacity for critical, very good-excellent (27-30 e praise) who will have deepened the subject in an autonomous and meaningful way.
