Learning objectives

To provide knowledge on the methodologies of functional genomics and
their possible applications. To provide knowledge tools to understand the innovative applications of genomics and transcriptomics. To allow students to analyse cases taken from the scientific literature.

Course unit content

The contents of the course concern the methodologies and strategies to study the structure and functions of the genomes of complex organisms. This will be supported by examples and case studies of application to medicine, biology, agriculture, environmental problems.

Sequencing genomes
How to interpret information in a genomic sequence (in silico methods)
Genome anatomy
Transcription of complex genomes (human, animal, plant)
Synthesis and processing of RNA
Regulation of genome activity
Analysis of transcriptome
Molecular arrays and methods for analysis of arrays
Other methods for analysing the transcriptome (differential display, cDNA-AFLP, SAGE)
Quantification of the transcriptome
Methodologies in RealTime and theoretical bases
Genetic-molecular methods to study the function of individual genes (two hybrid, phage display, genetic footprinting, gene inactivation)
Site-specific mutagenesis
In vivo methods to analyse gene function in higher organisms (plant and animals)
Molecular methodologies to obtain knock-in, knock-out animals and mutagenised plants
Applications of functional genomics to pharmacology, medicine, agriculture, environment

Teaching methods

The course is organised with frontal lectures and seminars on specific topics, with slides for illustration of concepts and applications. Case studies from the literature are presented.

Assessment methods and criteria

The exam is oral. The student has two possible options: a regular oral exams with two questions, or else a slide presentation on a topic agreed upon with the lecturer.
Verification of Dublin descriptors:
-knowledge, application of knowledge and learning ability are verified during the discussion of the exam or the presentation, in the replies to questions.
-communication ability, verified through the presentation or replies to questions. It is required that the student uses an appropriate language and correct terms.
