Learning objectives
The course is designed to give students the fundamental notions of the general part of Criminal Law. Through the study of the constitutional principles which govern the Criminal Law, through the analysis of the institutes and provisions of the general part of Criminal Law and through the study of the leading cases, the course aims to allow the student to learn the method which is necessary in order to work autonomously and competently in a future job within Institutions where there are issues concerning criminal law. At the end of the course we expect that the student would be able to: 1) be autonomous in identifying the principles and rules of criminal law (knowledge and comprehension skills); 2) recognize and analyse the application of provisions and rules in the case law (ability to apply knowledge and comprehension); 3) analyze with method the case law concenrning criminal law (autonomy in judgment); 4) develop a correct legal language (comunicative skills); 5) make connections between different legal issues in the field of criminal law and be autonomous in critical reasoning (learning skills).

Course unit content
The course will cover the fundamental issues concerning the general part of Criminal Law: the constitutional principles of Criminal Law; the application of Criminal Law; the elements of the crime (tipicità, antigiuridicità, colpevolezza); attempt; punishment and its forms. During the course, connections with some crimes will be used to clarify some complex issues of the general part of criminal law.

Teaching methods
The most important notions of the general part of Criminal Law will be analysed in the first part of the class. In order to allow the students to attend the course with advancement, at the beginning of the course the professor will verify the preliminary knowledge of the students and plan a review of some foundamental notions and basic principles. During the course, connections with some crimes will be used to clarify the general principles. The second part will be a more practical one, because it will focus on some leading cases.
Elly will be used for the publication of research materials and decisions and the professor will inform the students about the publication of these materials. The professor will use slides with outlines of the fundamental institutes. Experts will be invited for seminars on specific topics.
The argomentative skills of the students will be devoloped also through discussions and debates.
Assessment methods and criteria
- For the students who attend the course during the academic year 2018/2019: the final exam consists in a written test composed by 3 open-ended questions ( students will have 2 hours to answer the questions).
- For the students who attended the course before academic year 2018/2019: the final exam is oral (see published syllabus 2017/2018).
