Learning objectives

The fundamental objectives of the course are, on the one hand, to increase the critical, historical and literary knowledge of Italian modernism, in its intrinsic and relational characters in the European context. On the other hand, provide the students with a critical analysis model of literary text (of short, but not limited fiction), able to grasp the many implications it has underlined: from the history of cultural and literary movements to editorial opportunities, from connections with European literature on the most specific problems of the Italian context, from the history of individual authors to the epistemological crisis that distinguishes much of the culture of the early twentieth century. The ultimate goal is to solicit an articulated, problematic and punctual reflection of the narrative text that, starting from the modus operandi proposed in the lesson, can represent a valid approach model more generally for narrative production.

Course unit content

The course (which develops from coordinates traced in Module A) intends to deepen a fundamental moment for the history of short fiction in the twentieth century, represented by the modernist novel.

A first part of the course will be devoted to the historical-critical deepening of the modernist canon, the general characteristics that can be attributed to this age and to the writers and inscribable magazines (in various degrees and degrees) in this perspective. In general, the reading and analysis of some novels (by Pirandello, Svevo and Tozzi) will follow.

A second and last part will be devoted to the presence of short fiction in the magazine "Solaria", in a contradictory picture which, on the one hand (in the critical reflection of the magazine) cherishes the novel, and on the other (in the creative proposal) And it promotes almost exclusively short narrative. This case study will give an emblematic moment to history of short fiction of the twentieth century, which is on the one hand often perceived by the authors as a minor form (compared to the leading genre of the novel) and on the other hand (perhaps this ) Used rarely as a ground for fervent experimentation.
