Learning objectives

The course aims, through an elementary introduction to the Sanskrit grammar, to develop the skills of reading, analysis and understanding of simple texts, also confronting with the research methods of comparative linguistics and Indo-European studies.

Prerequisites

none

Course unit content

Primary purpose of the course is to provide the rudiments of the language (in particular related to the morphology of the name and the verb of classical Sanskrit) both from an indeuropean point of view (with a minimal approach to comparative linguistics) and the more contemporary theoretical theories (rethinking Sanscrit through a reflection of the transformational-generative theory of the deep and superficial cases).

Bibliography

Carlo Della Casa, "Corso di sanscrito", CUEM-UNICOPLI, Milano, 1998, and material given during the lessons

Teaching methods

Lessons will be frontal, as much as possible in seminar style. Grammar will be mostly learned directly from linguistic material, which will be discussed and deepened together .

Assessment methods and criteria

The test will be oral and will aim to evaluate, starting from sentences discussed in class, the skills achieved by the candidate in the two above outlined macro-areas.
