Learning objectives
Aim of the course is the improvement of the abilities of comprehension of written and spoken language, the acquisition of specific terms, in order to operate in the working area.

Course unit content
The course introduces midwifery terminology and its use in clinical practice.

1. BASIC HOSPITAL VOCABULARY
Lay terms and definitions; describing illness, taking a history (1)
2. GYNAECOLOGY
The female reproductive system; a gynaecological consultation; giving instructions, taking a history (2)
3. PREGNANCY
A normal pregnancy and routine tests; antenatal clinics and antenatal classes; common pregnancy disorders; fertility (decline); taking a history (3)
4. CHILDBIRTH
The midwife; going into labour; newborn complications; the premature baby; machines and equipment used in NICU; postpartum depression; twins.

Assessment methods and criteria
A written test will verify the comprehension of texts and the knowledge of specific terminology through true/false, gap - fill exercises, dialogues and multiple choice format.
