Learning objectives
Romance Philology:
The course aim to refine the philological and linguistica abilities gained by the student in the previous 3 years cycle. This should allow the student to be able to understand, analyze frenc and occitan medieval texts, and comment upon them in an european framework, according to the comparative approach of romance philology
Italian Philology:
The specialistic course of Italian philology will allow the student a comprehension of the critical methods of philology and the variants critic. In particular the study of the works of Vittorio Sereni will give an understanding of the fundamental connection between the literary work and its historical and linguistic context
Prerequisites
ROmance Philology: none
Italian Philology:
A good knowledge of the history of the italian language and of the history of italian literature is required.
Course unit content
ROmance Philology:the Fiore and the attributive problem. After an analysis of the relationships between Fiore and Roman de la Rose, the course will comment upon the attributive problem, crucial since the discovery of the text in the XIX century and still open.
Italian Philology:
After an introduction to the methods and the purposes of the author philology, the course will focus on the three collections of Vittorio Sereni, Frontiera, Diario d’Algeria and Gli strumenti umani. The frontal lessons will be dedicated to a punctual analysis of the constructive ratio of the collections and to some analysis of singular poems, with attention on the various stages of the manuscripts redaction so as to study their genesis and correction process, and to appreciate their importance both from the historical and the stylistic and linguistic point of view.

Teaching methods
Romance Philology:
Given the presumably low number of students, the course will consist for the first half in front lesson, for the second half in seminar lessons where the student will be asked to cooperate in reading, translating and commenting the texts. The course will be accompanied by lessons about the reading directly from mss.
Italian Philology:
Besides frontal lessons introducting the work of the author and the historical and literary context, practical exercise on reading and transcribing from the autographs will be undertaken. Each student will be required to produce a short essay ,consisting of the transcription of one or more poems and evaluation of the variants, to be discussed during the last lessons.
Assessment methods and criteria
Romance Philology:
The oral exam will test the abilities to translate and analyse an old french and old italian text. The questions will be of several kinds (the final note is a mean of each): - comprehension test (of a text read in the course)
- philological and linguistical text on a specimen from a text of the course; - test on historical knowledge (reference texts in the bibliography)
Italian Philology:
The final proof will consist of an oral examination in which the student will be required to demonstrate a basic knowledge of the period taken into account,of the work of Sereni in general, regarding both the contenutistic, metrical, stylistic and the textual aspects. A student demonstrating incomplete knowledge of the literary context or of the philological method will not be judged sufficient. On the final evaluation will be considered: sufficient (18-21) the student able to manage properly the concepts and terms of the discipline, quite good or good (22-26) the student who demonstrates an autonomous ability of reflection, very good (27-30 with laude) the student who will have improved his knowledge through the study and analysis of critical editions.The final evaluation depends also for attending students on the work discussed in itinere.
The final mark is the average grade of the two.
