Learning objectives
The course aims to enable the learner to know and understand the essential elements of etiology, symptomatology, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures of the most significant pathological conditions of general surgical interest verifiable in pregnancy.
The knowledge and insights gained can be applied to identify the diseases of surgical interest verifiable in pregnancy, preparing an appropriate care plan.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
Students must demonstrate knowledge and understanding about
benign and malignant breast neoplasms, acute abdominal diseases in pregnancy, with particular reference to occlusive and peritonitic diseases, vascular diseases with particular reference to venous diseases, main oncological and haemato-oncological diseases that can occur in pregnancy.
Prerequisites
Notions of anatomy and Physiology
Course unit content
The most important diseases of surgical interest in pregnancy are discussed: abdominal diseases, vascular diseases, diseases of the breast. The specific relationships between diseases and pregnancy are treated.
Traditional lessons are supplemented by interactive teaching modules, with direct links from the classroom to surgical units.
At the end of the first phase with didactic lectures, students are introduced in the operating space; here can compare and integrate with clinical practice the concepts learned.

Teaching methods
First didactic step consists of frontal lessons in multimedia lecture room, with real-time links to the surgical operations center.
The second phase includes practical lessons with tutor, in the ward and in the operating room, with interactive participation of the learner , in order to gain experience and practical skills needed to identify and manage surgical diseases in pregnancy.
Assessment methods and criteria
The achievement of the objectives set by the course is done through oral examination to each candidate.
The questions posed to the student shall ascertain whether it has reached the goal of knowledge and understanding of the content of the course.
Through questions on preventive and diagnostic-therapeutic strategies will be determined whether the learner has achieved the goal of applying the acquired knowledge
Other information
The topics on the agenda can undergo partial changes, depending on the program changes of other teachers, with consequent demand from learners to discussion of not taught topics in courses congeners.
